PSYCHOTHERAPY – WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE AND HOW CAN IT HELP?

Psychoterapia - jak wygląda i w czym może pomóc?

Today we are more and more willing to reach for therapy conducted by a psychotherapist. Who is this person, what does he / she do and who can treat him / her?

WHAT IS THAT?

Psychotherapy is a variety of methods of treating a wide range of mental disorders and problems. During this process, the patient has direct contact with the therapist. Usually a minimum of a few treatment sessions are needed for treatment to occur. Therapies last for weeks, months and even years.

WHO CAN HOST MEETINGS?

In order to conduct therapy, a person must have the appropriate qualifications. Nobody wants anyone to mess with our psyche. Therefore, she has to be trained in any psychotherapeutic trend and she has to undergo her psychotherapy herself. Moreover, for the sake of the safety of his patients, a good specialist supervises his work, i.e. consults his patients with a therapist who is more experienced than himself.

GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS

Psychotherapy is usually group and individual meetings. Some people start with meetings alone with a specialist, because it is easier to overcome fear here. Such sessions also encourage you to transform into them very intimate and difficult situations from your life. On the other hand, group therapy is a place where a group of patients meet with a therapist or therapists. It is especially crucial if we have problems in dealing with people, because in such a safe environment it is easier to overcome our limitations. Often some people, e.g. during addiction treatment, use both forms of help. They attend group meetings regularly and discuss them in one-on-one when problems arise. Either way, psychotherapy in both forms is effective.

DO YOU NEED TO TAKE MEDICATION?

Often times, people are afraid to go to a psychotherapist because they are terrified of the potential need to take pills. Is there really anything to be afraid of here? Firstly, it should be emphasized here that pharmacological treatment is not done by a psychotherapist, but by a psychiatrist. Psychotherapy is very often carried out without the use of chemical treatments. Sometimes combining both methods brings better results, but nothing prevents you from focusing only on the therapy. A significant part of the patients of psychotherapeutic offices are people who do not take pharmacotherapy.

TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY

It is also worth knowing that psychotherapy is divided into many different schools. There is no one best. Each of them has its own strengths and weaknesses. The key fact is that each of them works and helps patients. There are, inter alia, therapies: cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, Gestalt and psychoanalytical. Before we go to a given specialist, it is worth finding out a little more about the current in which it operates.

ADDICTION TREATMENT

Psychotherapyplays a key role in the treatment of addiction worldwide. An addicted person may, for example, give up alcohol or drugs and go through the withdrawal, but if he does not change his thinking, he will quickly “cope” with life in the old way, that is by resorting to his addiction. That’s why addicted people are sent to psychotherapy. Most often they attend group meetings here, but also use individual help. Such therapy is the time when you can learn to function well in society without resorting to destructive methods. Addictions are often referred to as emotional diseases because the addict cannot cope with them. In such a place, he can learn to name, experience or talk about what he is feeling. In the treatment of addiction, education about the mechanisms of the disease is also necessary so that

TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD

Today, he sees a difficult childhood play an increasingly important role in the problems of adults. That is why psychotherapy cares about healing past wounds in a safe place. Therapies for adult children from alcoholic families (ACA) are very popular in Poland (due to the level of alcoholism in this country). Psychotherapy is about dealing with a difficult childhood and the truth about your dysfunctional parents. Thanks to this, such people do not reproduce the negative behavior of their parents later and are able to both start a happy family and live alone in a satisfactory way. Another form of treating the past is therapy for DDD, i.e. people from dysfunctional families. It happens that DDA and DDD therapy are combined together.

TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION

Another important problem that psychotherapy can help us with is the treatment of depression. If we want to get out of it, therapy is one of the best options we have at our disposal. Often times, people get discouraged because they don’t see the results in the short term. However, it is worth being patient and giving psychotherapy a chance for a few months before you give it up. Sometimes it is so that the best results are visible only, for example, one year after the end of treatment. Sooner others will see the change in us and tell us about it than we will see it in ourselves.
